Training is our biggest concern. Over $250 million dollars are spent yearly on education by the United Association around the country. We have training centers throughout the state and offer classes to keep our members up to date on the newest technologies. Many of these classes are taught during evening hours so they are more easily attended after work. The more knowledge and skill you acquire, the more employable you become. Classes are taught by members and it is a very fulfilling way to help your peers.
The training coordinator is a full time employee and is in charge of keeping the apprentices and journeymen educated. They keep an eye on the apprentices as they work their way to state testing. Training coordinators also set up night classes and schedule instructors.
Most all of the night classes are instructed by journeymen who volunteer and want to help others learn. Classes in welding, rigging, back-flow testing, medical gas installation, and piping layout are just a few examples of the many offered each semester. Generally, classes are held on nights or weekends so that students are not interrupting work schedules. These classes are free of charge to members and widely utilized.
If a member wants to get involved as an instructor they will be given every opportunity to succeed. Many of the classes are already set up with outlines and a syllabus, but what makes it educational? Training coordinators will send instructors for a paid week of instructor training yearly. With completion of the five year program the instructors become certified and many take a few free online courses and graduate with a degree!
All members are invited to attend classes free of charge. Many classes are available for continuing education for plumbers as an added bonus. Just a few examples of what type of classes are typically available
