In a simple definition, a union is a club, society or association formed by people with a common interest or purpose.
We basically come together and make decisions as a whole. Everyone has a say and matters are voted on.
Elections are held every three years and we vote in a few full time employees to take care of the business as a whole.
There are many checks, balances, and procedures so that all members have an equal say and opportunity to succeed.

Can you pick him out? It goes to show that the working members are the people that have ownership in their union by being involved. The person taking the photo serves on the executive board. Just normal working people with motivation to make our union better!
Unions have been instrumental in many advancements of safety and work conditions throughout the years. The work has been done making 40 hour weeks and other benefits, are these just law and are unions still needed? The answer is yes, unions are still needed. Nothing lasts forever if it has a cost to employers and is not maintained by workers.
As a union we elect a few representatives to meet with a group from the contractors to come to a deal on increases for the next contract. You don't meet with them one by one to beg for a raise, we collectively bargain to achieve these scheduled raises. Democracy in action!
