So what is it that makes union members so happy? Benefits give them the assurance that everything is taken care of if life throws you a curve.

We have some of the best health insurance available. Why? It is because the membership votes to keep it like that! As a bonus, most plans offer a dollar bank (like a flex spending account) that collects any extra monies paid in by your employer to use for out of pocket expenses. The money that pays for this is not taken off of your check; it's paid in per hour as a non-taxable item by the contractor. Once you reach the set amount of hours per month required, any extra goes to the dollar bank!
What is a pension? This might be one of the greatest retirement tools ever! A pension is paid to you after retirement on a monthly basis. With the proper amount of time in the union, retirees see thousands of dollars every month with payments lasting the rest of your life! Imagine going into your golden years making a pension on top of the 401k investments and Social Security. This is how life is supposed to be after years of hard work. Retire with dignity and confidence.
Most UA locals also have a 401K that is used as a supplemental pension. A nice hourly rate of pay goes into this plan that is covered by the contractor. There are also opportunities to add to this amount from your check if you like. Plan for your future.
So who takes care of these funds and makes sure they are working?
There is a labor-management team that meets quarterly to get updates and make decisions on how to make funds perform as designed. Decisions made are in unison with the labor members that were voted to represent the membership on the board along with some contractor representatives. Investment managers, health insurance representatives and legal council make sure all monies are working as needed to keep benefits fully funded. Fund updates are given at every monthly membership meeting so that members can see what is happening and ask questions.
